DATES TO BE AGREED WITH YOU
Let’s say there’s a particular film you’d really love to make but you don’t know where to start or what you’ll need to film. And you’ve no idea how to actually film it so it looks and sounds great. You can do it and I can help.
Let’s spend some time together thinking about the editorial side of your project: what will make good scenes? What’s its narrative – what happens and what’s at stake? Why does it matter? How will you do the interviews? Whose voices do we hear? Who will you film and how will you film them? What different visual material will you need? Who’s your audience? Here, the 30 years I’ve spent as a documentary director and exec come in handy!
Then let’s spend the rest of the time looking at the gear you’ve got and how you might use it creatively to get the best results. Which bits and bobs you could add to improve picture and sound. If you’ve got no gear at all then that’s totally fine – let’s work out a set-up which works for you and fits your budget. I can advise how and where to buy stuff so you’ll save money and angst. If your plan is to shoot on a smartphone then that’s fine as well – let’s talk about how to get the best out of smartphone picture and sound. You’ll be surprised by how good we can make smartphone filming look and sound.

This course is a mix of editorial and technical. It might make sense to talk about the editorial stuff (your story and how to tell it) in a Zoom session before spending a day together working on the tech stuff about how you’re going to film your story. But that’s up to you. Over the two sides of the course, I’d expect to cover
· how to build narrative into your film – that’s important: it’s why people keep on watching
· what are the basic visual building blocs you’ll need to put together a short documentary film
· thinking about music
· how to interview people to get the best out of them
· how to get the best out of your existing gear
· kit and gizmos which may make your film look and sound better
· how to make your smartphone into an effective filming tool
· how and where to buy stuff to save you money – I can save you your course fee!
We can/do supply cameras but if you’d prefer to work with your own camera then let me know in advance.
